What is Fiddler On The Roof?
By: Brooke Wigmore
Fiddler on the roof is a story/ movie that we read and are watching in class. It is about Tradition in Anatevka, a little village in Russia in the year of 1905. This story shows how the Jewish religion dealt with marriage in the early 1900’s.
At the beginning it started with a family whose daughters were old enough to get married off. But one of the three daughters, Tzeitel didn’t like the idea of having someone choose her wife for her. She was in love with another man than who the match maker wanted to set her up with. So Tzeitel decided she wanted to break tradition and told her dad that she was in love with the shoe maker and who she was set up with. So her dad, being a pushover, let her marry the man she was in love with and not who the match maker chose for her.
That little example shows that the fiddler on the roof is about change in major things that happened to the Jewish tradition in the early 1900’s
